Africa Energy Forum 2023

Between 20-23 June 2023, Kenya played host to the 25th Edition of the African Energy forum (AEF). Held under the patronage of Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, the 25th AEF gathered governments and business leaders in the energy sector to identify opportunities, form partnerships, and move the energy industry forward.

Notably, wind power was center-focus at the Forum. Among the key issues of discussion were financing and regulations to boost the use of wind energy on the continent. This was premised on the fact that Africa has huge potential for wind energy production, prompting international financial institutions, governments and the private sector to pursue partnerships that harness the potential and increase electricity access to homes and businesses. However, only a paltry one percent of the globe’s wind farms are currently found in Africa, amid funding challenges that have hampered such projects.

Kenya being the home to the biggest wind power plant in Africa, the 310 megawatts Lake Turkana Wind Power Project and has three other plants, cemented the decision to host the forum. The Forum also targeted young entrepreneurs and institutions of higher learning as part of tapping Africa’s youthful population to boost the uptake of green energy.
